AB OBJECTIVE: Co-infection with HIV and human T-cell lymphotropic virus
type II (HTLV-II) is known to be prevalent among intravenous drug users
(IVDUs). There are some reports indicating that HTLV-II may modify the
HIV infection, while it is not clear the natural history of HTLV-II and
effects of HTLV-II on prognosis of HIV infection. In order to know
natural history of HTLV-II infection and their distribution, we
conducted epidemiological study on HTLV-II infection among Colombian
native Indians. METHODS: We screened 215 plasma samples of 2 different
ethnic groups (Guahibo and Wayuu Indians) for the antibodies against
HTLV-I/II and HIV with particle agglutination (PA) test.
Seropositivities of HTLV-I or HTLV-II were differentiated by HTLV type
specific western blot (WB). RESULTS: HTLV-II carriers were found in
Guahibo Indians (29/92, 31.5%) and Wayuu Indians (5/123, 4.1%). There
was no case infected with HIV. HTLV-II seroprevalence in females showed
age-dependent increase. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: We found high endemic
foci of HTLV-II among Colombian native Indians. These subjects are
useful to study on natural history and pathogenesis of HTLV-II infection
as well as the effects of HTLV-II on HIV co-infection.
