  11.  AB    OBJECTIVE: Co-infection with HIV and human T-cell lymphotropic virus
  12.        type II (HTLV-II) is known to be prevalent among intravenous drug users
  13.        (IVDUs). There are some reports indicating that HTLV-II may modify the
  14.        HIV infection, while it is not clear the natural history of HTLV-II and
  15.        effects of HTLV-II on prognosis of HIV infection. In order to know
  16.        natural history of HTLV-II infection and their distribution, we
  17.        conducted epidemiological study on HTLV-II infection among Colombian
  18.        native Indians. METHODS: We screened 215 plasma samples of 2 different
  19.        ethnic groups (Guahibo and Wayuu Indians) for the antibodies against
  20.        HTLV-I/II and HIV with particle agglutination (PA) test.
  21.        Seropositivities of HTLV-I or HTLV-II were differentiated by HTLV type
  22.        specific western blot (WB). RESULTS: HTLV-II carriers were found in
  23.        Guahibo Indians (29/92, 31.5%) and Wayuu Indians (5/123, 4.1%). There
  24.        was no case infected with HIV. HTLV-II seroprevalence in females showed
  25.        age-dependent increase. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: We found high endemic
  26.        foci of HTLV-II among Colombian native Indians. These subjects are
  27.        useful to study on natural history and pathogenesis of HTLV-II infection
  28.        as well as the effects of HTLV-II on HIV co-infection.
